Services

Aftercare is here to make sure that youth have the support they need to transition to adulthood successfully. We can help youth set a positive course for their lives.

Aftercare services are available to youth ages 17 up to 23 in every county of Iowa. Because we provide statewide coverage, we are able to offer consistent services and continuity of care to those we serve. Meaning, if a

youth has to relocate for one reason or another (and they often do) everything they have been working on in Aftercare can move with them. Youth have the opportunity to pick up where they left off.

the network

The Iowa Aftercare Services Network (IASN) is a coalition of Iowa’s leading experts working with youth aging out of court-ordered placement.* The youth we serve face many unique challenges as they exit care, often without family or supportive adults to help them. Our services are designed to address both the immediate needs and long-term goals of these young people.

*Foster care, kinship/relative care, group care, shelters, and juvenile detention, among others.

Pre-Aftercare (ages 17 - 18)

We understand that aging out can be both exciting and a little scary. Getting connected to Aftercare before youth age out can help them understand their options and get a plan together before exiting care. At age 17, youth can meet with an Aftercare Self-Sufficiency Advocate (SSA) to discuss their plans for finding a place to live, getting a job, or exploring educational opportunities. Contact us for more information or call 800.447.1985 to be referred.

Core Aftercare (ages 18, 19, and 20)

Youth who have experience with out-of-home placement, have already faced challenges that most people never have to deal with. By choosing to participate in voluntary Aftercare services, they get the independence they want when they age out, and guidance to make decisions that are right for their future. Through Aftercare, youth gain: access to a supportive adult, life skills training, financial assistance, and connections to countless resources.

As a Core Aftercare participant, you may be eligible for financial support:

Preparation for Adult Living (PAL stipend)

A monthly stipend based on factors such as age and income. Youth must have exited placement at age 18 or older and be enrolled in an education or work training program, and/or be employed.

Vendor Payments

Limited emergency assistance for those who do not qualify for the PAL stipend.

Extended Aftercare (ages 21 and 22)

Extended Aftercare services include periodic check-ins with their advocate, and referrals to needed services. As youth near age 23, services become more of a safety net that provides support and assistance as needed. Extended Aftercare participants with demonstrated financial need may be eligible for limited assistance.

You don't have to do this alone

If youth choose to participate in Aftercare, they will be paired with a Self-Sufficiency Advocate (SSA). Advocates are available to offer help and guidance, but they also recognize and respect their independence as an adult.

Advocates will work with youth to:
  • Set and reach personal goals.
  • Find and keep a safe place to live.
  • Obtain funds to pay for emergency expenses and bills.
  • Enroll in college or job training, and/or get a job.
  • Find a doctor, dentist, or counselor.
  • Master skills you need to live on your own.

The extension of Aftercare is so crucial. I’m turning 21 next year and having support for those extra years is really going to be helpful.
